SAN ANTONIO - The 59th Medical Wing at Lackland Air Force Base received an American flag Thursday that offered hope to thousands of soldiers, sailors, Airmen and Marines who were wounded in Iraq.

The flag is one of four displayed in Hero's Highway, a tent that wounded troops entered as they were brought into the Air Force Theatre Hospital at Joint Base Balad, Iraq.

We recently had a great visit from our friend and supporter, Mark Dolfini of Standing for the Fallen. Since May of last year, Mark and the Marines of the Lafayette, IN Marine Corps League have have worked diligently almost every single weekend raising funds to purchase supplies for our warriors at Landstuhl.

We are deeply saddened to learn that Staff Sergeant Robert 'Brian' Cowdrey was killed on October 13 while serving with the 3rd Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. According to his wife Jill, he was on a mission treating patients when he came under enemy fire.

Like all Americans, my memories of that day are vivid: The unbelievable sight of the burning towers, the horror and despair of the jumpers, the shock of realization when the Pentagon was hit: America is under attack.

We finally summon the courage and do what we’ve come here to do.  We ask the taxi driver to take us to Ground Zero.  

It's well after midnight, and quiet in lower Manhattan.  But as we approach the area the sky is filled with the foreboding glow of floodlights.

On 9/11, I remember sitting in art class at Kofa High School, watching the attack on TV. I was going to graduate in a few months, already planning on the military. But that solidified things. Earlier today the remaining inpatients at Walter Reed were transferred to the combined National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda. The transfer was moved up a day due to the approaching hurricane. At the American Veterans Center's 2008 conference, Major Chuck Ziegenfuss talks about the injuries he sustained in Iraq in 2005 and the inception of Project Valour-IT.

To date, Soldiers' Angels Project Valour-IT has supplied over 6,000 severely wounded Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines with adaptive laptops and other devices to aid their recovery and reintegration.

On July 1, 2010, Cpl. Larry Harris Jr. of the 3/1 Marines was on patrol in Helmand province when his unit was ambushed and fellow Marine Lance Cpl. Jake Henry was wounded.

While carrying LCpl. Henry to safety, Harris stepped on an IED. He took the brunt of the blast and died instantly. Henry survived.
